The second edition of Oddities & Rarities Festival aims to transcend the artificial boundaries between art forms, historical periods, reality and fiction. Through the eyes of the Romantics, the festival explores their fascination with the sublime and the inexplicable, translated into sound, word, image, light, and even the supernatural.
On 30 November 2025, Le Vecchie Musiche will present an exceptional magic lantern performance.
The Industrial Revolution, imperial expansion, and the democratization of the leisure sector transformed European visual culture over the course of the nineteenth century. Against that background, The Route of the Overland Mail to India(1850) was one of the most successful examples. The work, with music arranged by Michael Rophino Lacy, visualized the new mail and passenger route between Britain, India and China, creating for audiences the illusion of adventure and modernity without ever leaving London.
This co-production by Oddities & Rarities and Shhh (Monokino Ostend) presents the historical narrative from a contemporary perspective.

Step into a world of enchantment, science, and spectacle at the fairground of the late 19th century.
Today, the fairground is all about big and fast rides. But more than a century ago, things were very different. Travel back in time to the fair of old, with anatomical museums and mechanical theatres. Experience technological innovations from the steam engine to early cinematographs, and marvel at visual spectacles featuring magic lanterns and three-dimensional images. Encounter exotic animals and talking objects, be enchanted by the magical shows of magicians and illusionists. Seek love advice from fortune tellers and witness the rare wonders of a bygone era.

THEATERGARAGE ANTWERPEN WETENSCHAP CENTRAAL: DE MAGISCHE LANTAARN EN HET SPEKTAKEL VAN DE WETENSCHAP
Zowat 150 jaar geleden werd de magische lantaarn hét massamedium bij uitstek om mensen kennis te laten maken met nieuwe ontwikkelingen in wetenschap en techniek, politieke omwentelingen, verre landen en exotische dieren. Wetenschappers en entertainers, leraren en priesters, politici en obscurantisten: allemaal deden ze enthousiast een beroep op de toverlantaarn om te informeren, te onderwijzen en te entertainen. Een publiek van meer dan duizend mensen voor zo’n show? Dat was niet ongewoon.
Theaterwetenschapper Kurt Vanhoutte (Universiteit Antwerpen) belicht de spannende historiek van de toverlantaarn en toont hoe die aan de basis lag van de cultuur van de moderniteit en de hedendaagse gemediatiseerde samenleving. Samen met verzamelaar en lantaarnist Ditmar Bollaert brengt hij een geïllustreerde lezing, met authentieke lantaarn en originele lantaarnplaten. Achteraf is er tijd om de lantaarn en zijn werking van naderbij te bekijken en om vragen te stellen.
Deze avond wordt georganiseerd in het kader van Wetenschap Centraal, het wetenschapscafé van de Universiteit Antwerpen en in samenwerking met de Theatergarage.

CULTUURCENTRUM BAARLE DE TOVERLANTAARN EN HET ONTSTAAN VAN DE MODERNE WERELD
Zelfs de Nederlandse wetenschapper Christiaan Huygens kon niet voorzien wat hij in zijn handen hield toen hij rond 1659 een toverlantaarn in elkaar zette. Hij bouwde het eerste projectieapparaat…
Toch liet de uitvinder het instrument ongebruikt op zolder liggen. Toen Huygens’ vader, die de potentie ervan zag, Christiaan de opdracht gaf het apparaat gereed te maken voor een demonstratie aan het Franse hof, saboteerde hij het zelfs door de lenzen uit te schakelen. Huygens beschouwde de lantaarn niet als een serieuze wetenschap en geloofde dat ‘de poppenkast’ hem en zijn vader in verlegenheid zou brengen.
In zekere zin had hij gelijk en werd de lantaarn al snel gebruikt op kermissen en om mensen de stuipen op het lijf te jagen. Pas later werd de lantaarn gebruikt waarvoor we nu nog steeds media inzetten; overdragen van kennis door beeldmateriaal. De lantaarn werd het ultieme instrument van de middenklasse, bevredigde hun honger naar kennis en exotische plaatsen, maakte nieuwe inzichten uit de astronomie, geologie en microscopie toegankelijk voor een publiek van honderden tegelijk en betoverde nieuwsgierige ogen met vergezichten vanaf de Noordpool, Egypte , China, Afrika en vele andere onbereikbare plaatsen.
In deze voorstelling belicht theaterwetenschapper Kurt Vanhoutte de spannende historiek en toepassingen van de magische lantaarn. Ditmar Bollaert en Els Prevenier ondersteunen dit met een echte toverlantaarn en glasplaten die de mooiste beelden creëren.
Voor iedereen die ook maar de minste interesse heeft in het ontstaan van beeld.

KMSKA IN YOUR WILDEST DREAMS - ENSOR BEYOND IMPRESSIONISM
The Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp is hosting a prestigious exhibition entitled “In Your Wildest Dreams. Ensor Beyond Impressionism" as part of the 75th anniversary of James Ensor's death. This exhibition, which concludes the Ensor Year, focuses on Ensor's fascination with masks, skeletons, and caricatures—elements he used to express his non-conformism and frustrations. Additionally, it delves into the significant influence of popular culture on his work, particularly his inspiration from puppet theater and magic lantern shows.
The exhibition showcases how Ensor's art was deeply intertwined with the cultural landscape of his time, reflecting the social and political upheavals, technological innovations, and mass spectacles that characterized the late 19th century. By highlighting this symbiotic relationship, the exhibition reveals how Ensor's imaginative visions were not only a product of his artistic genius but also a response to the popular entertainment and visual culture that permeated everyday life.
As part of the exhibition, Ditmar Bollaert has provided an installation featuring a chamber theater with continuous video projection, further immersing visitors in the world that inspired Ensor. Additionally, several live performances are scheduled, offering a dynamic exploration of the themes that shaped Ensor's work:
